San Diego Fair

Hi folks, it's outdoor Wednesday hosted by Susan @ A Southern Daydreamer. Please pay her a visit to see more outdoor frolicking. Today I thought I'd take you on a virtual tour of a southern California summertime tradition, the San Diego County Fair. This year's theme at the fair was a tribute to music.

As you can see, there were tons of people there, even on a Tuesday. Though overcast, the weather was perfect. It was nice to escape the triple digit heat where I live.

Let me take you on a gastronomical tour of the fair. Here, the aroma of roasting corn filled the air.

How about some BBQ Turkey Legs? At $12 a leg, I had to pass. Sorry, I'm a budget conscious foodie.

They deep fry everything at the fair. S'mores, frog legs, avocados, cookies, twinkies...you name it, they fry it!
These chicken kabobs are much healthier, but also at $12, I think I'll just make it at home. Oh no, I'm beginning to sound like my mother!

Okay, we finally opted for the giant hot dog. Fairly priced at $4, with grilled onions to boot.

Do you remember Orange Julius? They used to have Orange Julius restaurants at the malls back in the 70's. They were the first smoothies! I just had to buy some for my kids to try and to take my taste buds down memory lane. We sampled all the flavors, orange, strawberry, and pina colada.

I got dizzy just watching the people on this ride.

And of course, we had to try our luck at some carnival games. She won!

Hope you're having a fun filled summer. Thanks for visiting the Lace and Ivy Cottage. Let me know you've come by and say hi!

Till next time,

Wow! Lorna, looks like fun! I've only been to the San Diego Zoo and Knotsberry Farm (is that what it's called?). Ours was spent swimming today so that's my OW entry. Anyway, when you visit my tablescaping blog, click on the link and it'll take you to my family blog!

Lorna, from the first picture of the building that looks like a juke box to the precious picture of the children with their faces through those holes of the silly characters, this is a fun post! And I believe I'll have a turkey leg... those look like they are big enough for Fred Flintstone. LOL! Love it! And I'll follow that up by a kabob and a hot dog. Can you tell who didn't eat their supper???

Happy Outdoor Wednesday...

XO,

Sheila :-)

Dear Lorna,
Thank you for taking us to the San Diego Fair...
there is nothing as fun as the fair and nothing as a bummer as the cost of the fair...I would have also passed on everything 12.oo....and I would have sounded like my daddy
I could just smell the auroma of the fair...the noises of the machines...the screams from the thrill of the ride...the beckoning of the game operators, "step on over here. everyone wins"...
your photographs were wonderful and the pictures of your children with the pizza was adorable.
Thank you for the birthday wishes you left for my daughter Amy over at Barbara's

That looks like so much fun! I posted about our big event here, the Strawberry Festival back in May. I just love those kinds of things. We had the turkey legs too, but I think they were only $6 or $7 so we got one. I really love that roasted corn they always have at festivals too.

Hope you're having a great week!

Lorna,
You are bringing back such great memories for me. I grew up in San Diego county so we always attended the fair (but back when it was called the Del Mar Fair). Even though it's not that far to go now, just can't afford a trip to the fair anymore. Just the cost of getting in & parking is more than I can afford. We now go to the little one in Perris in October. Much cheaper. But I miss eating all the great fried food at the fair. And Orange Julius, I loved them back when I was a teenager. So I thank you for bringing back such wonderful memories for me. Glad your family had a fun time at the fair. It has been way too hot up here in Menifee. I just have to hop in the pool to cool off now. Much less than going to the fair (but not as fun). Take care & try to stay cool.

This is one of the nice things about summer: the outdoor fairs with the food, rides, and people. Happy OW.

I'm like you. I think the food is overpriced. Some people just go for the food, though.
I enjoyed walking through the fair with your family. Thanks. I've never been to San Diego, only San Francisco and a couple of small places near there.

Hey Lorna,
Just loved that first pic of the Jukebox. Oh and those palm trees :) are just wonderful. I know they are everyday scenery to you, but I just love them. My family always enjoy going to the fair, but we too eat before we go. We will usually buy a treat/dessert while we are there. Do you have animals and exhibits too?
Thanks for sharing!
Crystal

Goodness...their food was expensive! I don't blame you for passing one single bit!
I was at that Fair every single year of my life! I loved it. I especially loved the garden part where they entered their flowers and plants.
I miss my home town sometimes...a lot! My family...I miss it all. I need to get down there more often.
