Welcome Friends! Did you know that June is National Iced Tea Month? I decided to take this week's tea party outside on the front porch. There are no fine bone china teacups and tea pots, no three tiered tray, and not even a lace tablecloth. To celebrate summer, I have a large pitcher of freshly steeped and iced blueberry green tea served in a Kerr's canning jar.

I recently purchased this color bowl from one of my favorite nurseries. I'll have to remember to take my camera with me the next time I visit.

To go along with our refreshing iced tea, I made some fresh blueberry streusel muffins. My kids could hardly wait for me to finish my photo shoot and sink their teeth into these wonderful treats. I will have the recipes for the muffins and the iced tea at the end of this post. I hope you give them a try.

And here's this week's tea trivia. Ice tea was invented in America by an Englishman who lived in Calcutta, India. Richard Blechynden was selling hot tea at the St. Louis 1904 World's Fair. No one was interested in drinking hot tea on a hot day, so he poured the tea over ice and served it in tall glasses. The rest is history. Now you know!

Blueberry Streusel Muffins

1/2 C sugar

1/4 C softened butter

1 egg beatened

2-1/3 C flour

4 t baking powder

1/2 t salt

1 C milk

1 t vanilla extract

1-1/2 C fresh or frozen blueberries

Streusel:

1/2 C brown sugar

1/3 C flour

1/2 t cinnamon

1/4 C butter

Directions

In mixing bowl, cream butter and sugar. Add egg and mix well. In another bowl, mix together flour, baking powder, and salt. Add dry ingredients to butter mixture, alternating with milk. You may add more milk if the batter is too thick. Add vanilla extract, then fold in blueberries.

For streusel, cut butter into sugar, flour, and cinnamon until it becomes coarse crumbs.

Fill 12 muffin cups with batter. Top with streusel mixture.

Bake in preheated 375 degree F oven for 25 minutes or until golden brown.

Makes 1 dozen muffins

Iced Blueberry Green Tea

1 C fresh or frozen blueberries

1 C sugar

1 C water

Juice of 1/2 lemon

8 C steeped green tea. You may use black tea or white tea.

In saucepan, combine blueberries, sugar, and water. Bring to a boil, then simmer for 10 minutes. Let cool. Strain syrup in a strainer, crushing the blueberries with a spoon. Squeeze lemon through strainer to catch seeds.

To steep tea, boil 8 cups of water and steep 8 bags of tea for 10 minutes. Remove bags and let tea cool.

In a large pitcher, combine blueberry syrup with tea and refrigerate until cold. Serve over ice.

Tea in the Hearth Room

Greetings, Tea Friends! It's my favorite day of the week, Tea Time Tuesday, when I have the pleasure of taking tea with all my friends in blogland. Today, let's have tea in the hearth room in front of the wood burning stove. Oh it's far too hot for a fire, it was about 100 degrees in SoCal today, but it's a cozy place to sit and relax.

I've taken out my birdie tea cup and teapot. Both were purchased from Home Goods, and though not old (I love old), they're some of my favorite pieces.

*I interrupt this blog post with some breaking news. We just had an earthquake here in SoCal. It's about 9:30 p.m., June 14. Well, it was more of a jolt, but just part of life here in California. Ok, the kids are back in their rooms. Let's return to the regularly scheduled program.*

Did you know that the custom of tipping servers was created in England's tea gardens? Locked, wooden boxes were placed on tables inscribed with the letters t.i.p.s. to insure proper service. Tea, Chocolate, and Roses

Welcome Tea Friends! I apologize for my absence, but it's been a whirlwind of activity here at the Lace and Ivy Cottage ever since we got back from my son's graduation in Dallas. I had four science fair projects due, our son came back for a short two week visit before he starts working back in Dallas, our other son came home after completing his first year at the university, and we're finally wrapping up the school year with the younger children. I haven't had an opportunity to wind down with a cup of tea in weeks! So, I'm so glad you stopped by today for a visit.

Let's step out to the sunroom on this sunny day in California and where I have tea set out for us.
I don't have any scones today, but I do have chocolate! What do you get when you add chocolate and roses to a simple cup of tea? Tranquili-tea!

Today's teacup is a thrift shop find. It's by Noritake.

The dessert plates and cake stand were a gift from a very thoughtful aunt.

This pretty tea pot was gifted to me by my cousin's MIL. She knew I loved tea, so she passed this on to me.

Before we end our visit, I'll leave you with an interesting piece of Tea Trivia:

What is the orange in Orange Pekoe? The Dutch royal family, the House of Orange, received this fine China tea from early Dutch traders. The name has nothing to do with the flavor or color of the tea, it was like stamping a seal of royal distinction on the exotic, new beverage.

UD Graduation

Hello friends, today I'm joining Heidi at Heart and Home for Gratitude Wednesday. I'd like to share with you a snapshot of our lives, past and present. On Sunday, May 16, 2010 our eldest son graduated Cum Laude from the University of Dallas. This is one of those monumental moments in life that just takes your breath away and makes you reflect on all of God's blessings in your life.

Have we actually come this far? By God's grace, Yes! Being a homeschooling mom, my children's education has been a priority in my life. And this day, I tasted the sweet fruits of my labor! To see one's child accomplish his goals and make his mark in this world is one of the most gratifying moments in a parent's life.

I know that the friends he's made will be lifelong ones, no matter which path each takes.

He and his lovely girlfriend share many memories of their college days, and now face a bright tomorrow with new chapters in their lives to fulfill.

Where has time gone? This was me and my hubby at my graduation day at UCLA 20 years ago.

I was a young bride and a young mom, and our son was 2 years old the day I graduated.

He was there the day I received my diploma...

and I was there when he received his.

My husband and I couldn't be prouder and more grateful for our son. The next 20 years promises to be filled with a day like this for each of our children. One down, 8 to go!

It's Tea Time!

Hello, tea friends! It's Tuesday and time set out our tea things and share a cuppa with other tea aficionados. In one corner of my dining room, a table for two is always set for tea. So please drop by any time and let me pour you a cup of serenity. I've always got ingredients in the pantry for some scones too.

Today, I've set out a panoply of vintage tea things: vintage tablecloth, vintage napkins, vintage china, vintage silverware, vintage teapot and teacups.

Nothing matches, not even the silverware. It's a potpourri of florals, just like a spring bouquet.

We can thumb through my Tea Time book and browse over recipes.

Today's teacup in the spotlight is a thrift shop find. It's very translucent. The design is simple on the outside, but has a pretty rose and leaves on the inside.

German Pancakes

Hello, Fellow Foodies! Do you ever crave a special dish or dessert at a favorite restaurant, but can't always satisfy it without breaking the bank or gaining an extra 20 pounds? We all do! My weakness was the German pancake at the Original Pancake House. It's a puffy, souffle-like pancake baked in the oven. It's served overflowing on a platter, sprinkled with powdered sugar, and accompanied by butter and lemon wedges. Oh, my mouth is watering as I type this! It's a massive, impressive, breakfast masterpiece that measures 14-16 inches in diameter. But at about $10 for just this pancake plus another $3 for a cup of coffee, it wasn't something I could enjoy frequently...until now.

I've tested this recipe a couple of times now, and am satisfied that it's just like the one at the pancake house. Now I can make about 4 of these for my hungry crowd without the $40 check!

I can't believe how simple, inexpensive, and fun it is to make.

German Pancake

Ingredients

1/4 C butter
1 C all-purpose flour
1 C milk
6 eggs
1/8 t salt
Powdered sugar
Lemon wedges

Directions

Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Melt butter into a cast iron skillet (I divided the batter between a large 12 inch and a small 8 inch) or a large casserole dish ( swirl the butter evenly in the dish).
Blend flour, milk eggs, and salt in a blender just until evenly blended. Do not whip too long.
Pour into prepared skillets or baking dish.
Bake in center of rack for about 16-18 minutes, until golden brown and fluffy. Do not overcook, or it will be a bit dry.
Sprinkle generously with powdered sugar and serve with lemon wedges to be squeezed on top.

Rooster Tablescape

Hello, fellow tablescapers! It's that time again for dishaholics in blogland to come out of the woodwork. Yes, there are many of us lurking out there, so please take the time to visit Susan @ BNOTP for more participants.

Many of us in blogland are rooster lovers. I, included, have been one for many years.

Oh, I've tried to overcome this unusual attraction to these plump, feathered friends by even ridding my home of excess poultry paraphernalia, but there were a few stragglers left behind. Why, oh why, did I subscribe to that "Less is More" mentality! To this day, I regret letting go of a pair of antique rooster lamps!

This lucky pair survived my momentary madness of "simplifying."

Although I do have my rooster collection of the indoor variety under control...

I can't say as much for the outdoor variety.

They can only hope never to find themselves on my dinner table as part of a tablescape!

It's Tea Time!

Hello, lovely ladies! It's Tuesday and time for tea all around blogland. Today I would like to share with you a Bible study tea I hosted just after Easter. Since I still had my spring tablescape up, I just took out my tea accoutrements and it was tea time!

The menu consisted of an assortment of cookies, blueberry lemon bread, currant scones with jam and mock devonshire cream, apples and brie, and fresh fruit. Among the teas served were pomegranate oolong, chocolate hazlenut, white wedding tea, and white vanilla grapefruit.

Now, to share with you a teacup from my collection...it's just my everyday teacup. It has no pedigree, it is not an antique, bone china, or even made in England. But it does have a lot of sentiment. I purchased this teacup from a gift shop at the famous Hotel Del Coronado in San Diego. My sweet hubby surprised me with a one night getaway for our anniversary a couple of years ago. So since then, I've used this teacup daily. I cherish it as if it were made for the queen!

Spring Brunch and Baked French Toast

Hello, fellow foodies and tablescapers! Recently, I invited a few friends over for a spring brunch. Initially, I had everything set up in my dining room, but the weather was so beautiful that I had to move it out to the front porch.
The flowers were blooming and the birds were singing. We even had our annual pair of robins building their nest at one corner of the porch.
Each guest had a small terracotta pot of verbena to take home as a keepsake.

I purchased these pewter bunny napkin rings from a yard sale. I'm so glad to finally use them.

Our brunch menu consisted of a ham and potato casserole, quiche, polish sausages, baked blueberry and pecan french toast, sliced tomatoes, fresh fruit, coffee, tea, and orange juice. Yes, we were a hungry crowd!
I'll be sharing the recipe for the baked french toast at the end of this post.

It was a lovely morning filled with food, friends, fellowship, and the beauty of a perfect spring day.

Baked French Toast with Blueberries and Pecans

Ingredients

12 slices of day-old French bread cut into 1 1/2 inch thickness
5 eggs
2 1/2 cups milk
1 cup packed brown sugar, divided
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1 cup chopped pecans
1/4 cup butter or margarine, melted
2 cups fresh or frozen blueberries

Directions

Arrange bread in a greased 13-in. x 9-in. x 2-in. baking dish. You may have to squeeze them in tight or use a larger pan. Deeper lasagna pans work well. In a bowl, combine the eggs, milk, 3/4 cup brown sugar, vanilla and nutmeg; pour over bread. Cover and refrigerate for 8 hours or overnight. *Note: I've also used Splenda brand brown sugar if you're watching your sugar intake. Just follow Splenda directions (use 1/2 the amount of Splenda)
Remove from the refrigerator 30 minutes before baking. Sprinkle pecans over egg mixture. Combine butter and remaining sugar; drizzle over the top. Bake, uncovered, at 400 degrees F for 25 minutes. Sprinkle with blueberries. Bake 10 minutes longer or until a knife inserted near the center comes out clean.

Bible Study Tea

Hello, dear bloggers! Today is my first time joining Lady Katherine's Tea Time Tuesday and Terri @ Artful Affirmations Tea Time Tuesday with Friends. What a great way to meet fellow tea aficionados in blogland! I am blessed to belong to a Ladies' Bible Study Tea Group started by a good friend of mine. Each month we take turns hosting the Bible study and tea in our homes. This was at my home a few months back. I have since hosted again and will share that tea with you next week.

These swan cream puffs, mini tarts, and cake were purchased from a local bakery.

I did, however, make the scones, mock devonshire cream, and an assortment of cookies.

Hi, my name is Lorna and I'm a dishaholic. Yes folks, it's Tablescape Thursday again and time to show our support for fellow tablescapers around blogland.

I've had a setback, friends. My habit with tablescaping has escaped the confines of my own home and I've taken it to a whole new level. No, not my front porch, or even my back porch, but about 10 miles from my own haven to my friend's lovely home!

Oh, for shame! Her husband greeted me at the door with raised eyebrows as I stood there with a box of the goods in hand! Am I actually pushing the habit to an unsuspecting friend?
You bet I am!
It was actually her 5oth birthday, and I wanted to do something out of the ordinary for her. So what to do? Give her a tablescape, of course, and it was a surprise to boot!
It didn't take much to set an attractive table. She already has such beautiful furnishings and accessories.

I used some of her Christmas ornaments, candles, and a tiered serving dish to accessorize. I even used her silverware that was a wedding gift over 20 years ago. I think this may have been the first time it's been out of the box!

She liked the brown and blue color scheme, so I bought a runner, napkins, plates, goblets, and a vase. I made the napkin rings from a spool of wired ribbon.

She was both surprised and delighted. And me? Well, I selfishly got my fix!

Pineapple Glazed Ham

With Easter quickly approaching, I thought I'd share with you my recipe for a glazed whole ham. It's always a crowd pleaser and quite impressive when garnished and set on a silver platter.

I always make a whole ham, but you could adjust the recipe for a half ham.

First, score the fat on a diagonal with a very sharp knife. I've also trimmed off the tough skin being careful not to remove the fat. You can see where I've done this on the right side of the ham in the above picture.

Next, pierce each diamond with a whole clove.

Bake, tented with foil, at 325 degrees for 11 to 14 minutes per pound. At the last 20-30 minutes, spoon glaze over ham and continue roasting uncovered. Continue basting ham with more glaze every 5-7 minutes until it becomes golden brown. Reserve remaining glaze and serve alongside your ham. Your family is guaranteed to love it! Happy Easter and Bon Appetit!

Pineapple Glaze

2 cups packed brown sugar
2 T cornstarch
1/2 t salt
2 cans crushed pineapple undrained or plain pineapple juice
2 T fresh lemon juice
2 T mustard

Mix brown sugar, cornstarch, and salt in sucepan. Stir in crushed pineapple(undrained) or pineapple juice, lemon juice, and mustard. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until mixture thickens and boils. Boil and stir 1 minute.

Fresh as a Daisy Tablescape

Hello dear Bloggers! I'm Ba-ack! I won't even try to explain why I've been MIA for months, but I'm so happy to be back in time to join the fun for Tablescape Thursday hosted by Susan at BNOTP and Thrifty Thursday with Leigh at Bloggeritaville. It was Christmas the last time I posted, and here it is almost Easter! So let's get on with the show...

I've named this tablescape Fresh as a Daisy and again used many of my thrifty finds.
The daisies are from the Dollar Tree as are the soup bowls. They rest atop a crystal etched salad plate purchased from an antiques mall.
The placemats are also from the Dollar Tree.

This tablescape makes me so happy, especially in the morning with the light shining through the window.
This lovely tureen is a yard sale find for 50 cents!

I don't know what this footed dish is called or used for, but I like it and also purchased it from a yard sale.

Bunny, pitcher, and teapot were all from Home Goods. The salt and pepper shakers and toothpick holder were from the Goodwill.

No, I didn't forget the silverware. It's on the buffet table.
The pitcher was a thrift shop find and the silver coffee pot was yet another yard sale find.
The silverware are a collection of vintage pieces found at various antiques stores.

Christmas in the Dining Room

Can you believe it? Only 2 Tablescape Thursdays left before Christmas! Make sure to visit Susan @ BNOTP for more decked out dining. I'm also linking up with lovely Leigh from Tales from Bloggeritaville for Thrifty Thursday.

My table is set for Christmas dinner as I eagerly await for my 2 boys to come home from college. It will be the first time since August that my family will be complete. This is the BEST Christmas present any mother could wish for!

This is one of my favorite thrift shop finds, all polished up for our Christmas table. It's so shiny you could see my reflection on it! It's a silver butter dish with a pivoting lid.

Say, ahhh...
a little wider, please...
The lid turns all the way around until it's hidden underneath the dish. Pretty snazzy, huh?

The table is very traditional, just like me.

The gold chargers are from Wal Mart. That reminds me, I have to purchase some silver ones for my January tablescape!

These pillar candles I use all year round by changing out the color of the candles. For Christmas, they get a little extra adornment with some ribbon and greenery.

The china is called Holly Holiday, purchased over the years from May Company. Remember that department store?

Red napkins, glittered fruit, and a gold organdy ribbon complete the setting, while the Mikasa water goblet and wine glass add a little sparkle.

Lastly, some simple Dollar Tree ornaments hang from gold ribbon from my Victorian chandelier.

Lemon Ricotta Cookies

Greetings fellow foodies! It's another delicious Foodie Friday at Designs by Gollum. Today's offering is a simple and delicious lemon cookie, perfect for your Christmas cookie swaps! Hope you give it a try!

Giada de Laurentis's Lemon Ricotta Cookies with Lemon Glaze

Ingredients

Cookies:

2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
1 stick unsalted butter, softened
2 cups sugar
2 eggs
1 (15-ounce) container whole milk ricotta cheese
3 tablespoons lemon juice
1 lemon, zested

Glaze:

1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
3 tablespoons lemon juice
1 lemon, zested

Directions

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F.

Cookies:

In a medium bowl combine the flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.

In the large bowl combine the butter and the sugar. Using an electric mixer beat the butter and sugar until light and fluffy, about 3 minutes. Add the eggs, 1 at a time, beating until incorporated. Add the ricotta cheese, lemon juice, and lemon zest. Beat to combine. Stir in the dry ingredients.

Line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper. Spoon the dough (about 2 tablespoons for each cookie) onto the baking sheets. Bake for 15 minutes, until slightly golden at the edges. Remove from the oven and let the cookies rest on the baking sheet for 20 minutes.

Glaze:

Combine the powdered sugar, lemon juice, and lemon zest in a small bowl and stir until smooth. Spoon about 1/2-teaspoon onto each cookie and use the back of the spoon to gently spread. Let the glaze harden for about 2 hours. Pack the cookies into a decorative container.

Note: These are cake-like cookies and freeze well. Just frost after thawing.

Christmas Tea Tablescape

Welcome, dear Bloggers! It's so nice to be back after such a prolonged absence and to be able to participate in Susan's Tablescape Thursday once again. Today, I'd like to invite you to a Christmas Tea and Cookie Exchange. Sit back, relax, and let me pour you a cuppa!

This tablescape has real food on it. Imagine that!

Simple tea fare can look so elegant with careful presentation, don't you agree?

Smoked salmon on sourdough, anyone?

Perhaps some curry chicken on croissant instead?

Oh, but you must have the cucumber and mint sandwiches!

Some fresh fruit to cleanse the palette. Incidentally, the crystal stemware are a Goodwill find. Ssshh, don't tell.

Please, help yourself to a Mimosa.

The crystal salad plates were a great find at a favorite antique mall. I purchased 11 for about a dollar a piece.

My sister made these place cards at the last minute. Aren't they cute?
My husband and I started collecting these pieces when we first got married. The pattern is Holly Holiday, purchased from a department store that's no longer in existence. Fortunately, we were able to collect enough for a seating of 16 before they went out of business.

Here's a sampling of the goodies on our cookie exchange table.

What's a tea without scones. Here are my currant scones, served with Devonshire cream, lemon curd and jam, of course!

For dessert, I made individual pumpkin trifles.

The Huntington Library

Hello, dear bloggers, and welcome to Outdoor Wednesday, hosted by the lovely Susan @ A Southern Daydreamer. Last week I took you on a home tour of San Marino, California. We will continue our tour with a visit to the Huntington Library and Botanical Gardens as I'll play docent to the Huntington's mansion and private art collection.

Let's meet at the outdoor patio where my daughters and my son's lovely girlfriend await us.

Upon entering, we find ourselves in this magnificent foyer with a double staircase leading to the upper floor.

But before we ascend to the main gallery, lets take a peek into the main parlor which is furnished with fine European antiques, rugs, and tapestries.

This is Isabella Huntington's parlor. It is decidedly feminine, and the subject matter of the paintings are all children. I could just imagine her serving tea to her guests in this room.

The architecture makes you think you're in Versailles rather than California.

Another impressive room is the dining room. Let's pretend this guard is the butler...
(bell rings) Dinner is served.

The main gallery is home to two very recognizable works of art.

These lovely pieces were used by the Huntingtons and not just for display, can you see all the scratches? So those of you who have beautiful silverware and china hiding in your hutches, take them out and enjoy them before they become museum pieces!

Chicken Florentine Artichoke Bake

Are you ready for a gastronomical adventure? It's Foodie Friday again hosted by Designs by Gollum, where cooks all over blogland share their culinary skills.

Today, I'm sharing with you a Chicken Florentine Artichoke Bake. It's a recipe from Better Homes and Gardens that I've personally tested for you. Since everyone is celebrating fall, I though it befitting to offer some comfort food to go with the changing weather.

Chicken Florentine Artichoke Bake

1 - 8oz dried bow tie pasta
1 small onion, chopped
1 T butter
2 eggs
1 1/4 C milk
1 t dried Italian seasoning
1/4 t crushed red pepper (optional)
2 C chopped cooked chicken
2 C shredded Monterey Jack cheese
1 - 14 oz can artichoke hearts, drained and quartered
1 - 10 oz pkg. frozen chopped spinach, thawed and well drained
1/2 C oil packed sun dried tomatoes, chopped
1/2 C grated Parmesan cheese
1/2 C soft bread crumbs
1/2 t paprika
1 T melted butter

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Cook pasta according to pkg. directions; drain. In med. skillet, cook onion in 1 T butter until tender. Remove from heat and set aside
In bowl,whisk together eggs, milk, seasoning, 1/2 t salt, and 1/4 t pepper, and crushed red pepper. Stir in chicken, Monterey Jack cheese, artichokes, spinach, tomatoes, half of the parmesan, pasta, and onion.
Bake, covered, 20 min. In small bowl, combine remaining Parmesan, bread crumbs, paprika, andmelted butter. Sprinkle mixture over pasta. Bake, uncovered, 10 min or until golden. Makes 6-8 servings.

Thrifty Tablescape

Welcome back, dear Bloggers! Where has the week gone? Once again it's Tablescape Thursday hosted by the ever popular Susan @ BNOTP and Thrifty Thursday with lovely Leigh @ Bolggeritaville.

It's still a fall theme here at the Lace and Ivy Cottage, but do you see a difference from last week's tablescape?

First, let's quickly turn our attention to the window, where a new valance is hung. I purchased this newly made, never used, Waverly fabric valance from an estate sale last week for a mere $3. It paid off to dig through a pile of fabric remnants! I think it warms up the room for fall and I can easily change it out for the seasons.

OK, back to the table. Though I have the same centerpiece as before, I now have a new place setting. They were purchased at a yard sale on the same day I purchased the valance. The lady wanted $30 for the set. I tried to haggle a little, but the lady wouldn't budge. She really didn't want to get rid of her dishes, but her hubby was making her because the dishes were making their shelves sag!

I wasn't convinced that I was getting a bargain, so I left.

But my hubby, who was with me that morning, talked me into buying them.
My man supports my tablescaping habit! So back I went and forked over the cash. After all, it was a service for 10 with extra pieces to boot. It's not everyday you can find that many matching dishes at a yard sale.

I have to admit that each piece is very heavy. It's no wonder her shelves were giving way! Lucky for me, I've got room in my bottom cabinets for storage.

The vintage green goblets are a thrift store find. I think I paid about $1.30 each.

There were over 30 pieces to the dishes, so it came up to less than a dollar a piece.

I love the rich color against the rustic table.

The napkins were a deal from Wal Mart. A pack of 4 for only $2.

The woven napkin rings were from the Goodwill @ only 10 for a dollar. My kids embellished them with silk leaves.

San Marino Home Tour

We just don't see this variety of architecture on modern built homes.

Metamorphosis Monday Kitchen Transformation

Welcome, dear Bloggers, to another Metamorphosis Monday hosted by Susan @ BNOTP. Have I got a MEGA MET for you today! Many of you know I've been absent for a couple of months because of a flood in my basement. Well, the renovation bug bit me and Big Daddy once again, and one project led to another, namely my kitchen.

Whenever I post pictures here at the Lace and Ivy Cottage, I've always avoided shots of my kitchen. If the kitchen is supposed to be the heart of the home, then mine was in desperate need of a heart transplant!

We've lived in this home for 11 years now, and we've been renovating it ever since, but the kitchen was always put on the back burner because of the high cost of kitchen renovations. Well, about 8 months ago, Big Daddy and I finally decided to bite the bullet and tackle the job ourselves by removing and sanding some upper cabinet doors. That's as far as the renovation got. So, for the last 8 months I had no cabinet doors and an even uglier kitchen.

I have always hated this hideous florescent light box. It served more as a fly trap than a light source!

Here, I started testing out different kinds of white paint. Do you have any idea how many variations of whites there are in the paint stores? These overhead cabinets above the sink housed the only other light source, a dim light bulb that was burnt out half the time. I've been preparing meals in this cave for 11 years now!

Soon after we moved in, we pulled down some cabinets that hung from the ceiling above this counter that further enclosed the kitchen. I would have to duck my head in order to see people in the other room!

Don't you just love the dark stained oak cabinets with the ambient florescent lighting? NOT!
OK, we're almost done. Just try to remember this shot, because soon it will be just a distant memory.
More testing of paint colors.

Almost done, I promise. Since the job was too daunting for Big Daddy and I to handle by ourselves, we surrendered to the fact that we needed professional help. We ended up hiring some professional painters who did work on the side, and charged us a song for the labor. I know, this is a mortal sin for you do-it-yourselfers, but I was desperate!
Good riddance to that light box! My ceilings are only 8 feet tall, but without that box, it feels like 10! The overhead cabinet over the sink was pulled out, too. Look at the light flood in through the windows, even with plastic sheets over them. The primer is already a great improvement.

After witnessing all the prep work required before painting, I'm so glad we hired someone else do it. We would never have been able to do the job as efficiently.

Here's a peek at my new island.

Do you tablescapers out there recognize my dining room? My dining table is in there, somewhere. I can't believe the stuff I found in our kitchen cabinets. Wedding presents that I've never even opened!

Out with the old florescent light box, overhead cabinets, and dark stain, and in with new recessed lighting, chandelier, pendant lights, and creamy white paint!
Let there be light!

I decided to have the island painted black to compliment the black appliances. I've also kept the cabinet door off and replaced them with baskets for some added texture. Don't you just love the designer lingo? Yeah, I've been watching HGTV for way too long.

Do you like my plate rack? I got used to the open shelves over the 8 months without them, and decided to keep the doors off of these. Big Daddy installed the lights, cabinet pulls, and knobs.

We also cut out the center of these door and replaced them with glass.

Here's a closeup.We chose a seedy glass that lends to the overall vintage look.

I chose and oil rubbed bronze finish for the cabinet hardware. I had remembered reading a blog some time ago that recommended Target. I wish I could remember who it was so I could thank her. They were significantly cheaper there than either Home Depot or Lowes.
Even my old counters don't look so bad anymore.

At the last minute, I decided on this paint color. It's called Ozone by Behr and is part of a vintage color collection. I really like it. And in case you're interested, I chose Creamy White by Behr in high gloss for the cabinets. It really is amazing what paint can do.

I had some old lace and seashells around the house and quickly fashioned this valance. It may eventually change, but it's good for now. Best of all, it cost me nothing.
We're keeping the old stools, though painting them black is in the future. They've been here since the house was built in the 80's and have withstood the use and abuse of my family. Why change a good thing?
Hanging cabinets are now replace by stylish pendant lights.

Even the ceiling got a new coat of paint. No more ketchup stains...one word...KIDS!
One last look. Do you remember the old kitchen? Nah, neither do I!

Foodie Friday Mexican Pulled Pork Sandwiches

Hi all! It's Foodie Friday once again hosted by Designs by Gollum. Satisfy your appetites and visit the other participants for more mouth watering recipes.

Now that the weather is finally cooling off, especially here in So Cal, it's time to pull your crock pots out of the cupboards and put them to use. With a little planning ahead, crock pots could really make life easier during those busy weekdays.

Today, I have a recipe for Mexican pulled pork sandwiches. This is my own recipe, so tweek it as you wish. I'm also one of those cooks who just "know" how much seasoning to put in, so my measurements are guesstimates at best. Just remember, you could always add more salt at the end, but can't take it out!

I used boneless pork for carnitas. Use any boneless pork, but I prefer it with some marbling, not too lean.

Add all the ingredients, Mexican style canned tomatoes, salt, pepper, garlic powder, chili powder, sliced onion. Cook on low for 10-12 hours or on high for 4-6 hours.

When it's done, take two forks and pull the meat apart into shreds.

Place into warm bolillo rolls or French rolls.

Top with shredded cabbage,

sliced red onions,

and fresh cilantro. Don't forget to pass the hot sauce!

Mexican Pulled Pork Sandwiches

3 lbs. boneless pork
1 can Mexican style tomatoes
1-2 tsp seasoned salt
1 tsp pepper
1 tsp garlic powder or a couple of cloves fresh garlic
2 Tbsp chili powder
1 onion sliced

Place all ingredients in a crock pot and cook on low for 10-12 hours or on high for 4-6 hours.
Shred meat with two forks. Meat will absorb liquid. Correct seasoning and stir.
Place on warm bolillo or French rolls.
Top with shredded cabbage, sliced red onions, and fresh cilantro.
Serve with hot sauce if desired.

Yosemite Part II and Short Break

Hello dear bloggers! It's Outdoor Wednesday again hosted by Susan @ A Southern Daydreamer. As promised, I give you Part II of beautiful Yosemite, CA.

But before I begin, I'd like to share with you the reason why it's been slow going here at the Lace and Ivy Cottage. You know the expression "Life Happens", well it's been happening all right.

This week, we had the misfortune of some severe water damage due to a broken pipe from a water softener. It destroyed some drywall, carpeting, and a custom built entertainment center in our media room. This once housed a humongous TV. What is it with men, big TVs and a dozen remote controls? I never spent much time here because I don't even know how to turn the TV on!

The water damage was so extensive that it warped much of the built in unit. This is just before demo.

Here's what I'm left with. Nothing but a black hole. Actually, it's black paint from behind the TV. See all the fans and heaters?

This is the opposite side of this floor. This WAS my school room. School resumes on Monday, Aug. 10 and I can't even access our books and supplies.

Needless to say, I'm quite overwhelmed. So I hope you all understand if I take a short break of a week or two until I can get normalcy in my life again. But I promise to have a lot to share when I return, and hopefully some AFTER pictures as well.

So without further ado, I present to you Outdoor Wednesday!

Outdoor Wednesday Yosemite Part I

Good day dear bloggers! I have great news, I found my camera! It's been missing for about 3 weeks and I had lost hope of ever finding it. But a few days ago, I told my 4 year old daughter that I would give her $5 if she found my camera. Since she's small, I figured she could crawl under tables, desks, nooks and crannies a lot better than I can. But no camera. Then just yesterday, she helped herself to $5 from my wallet and asked, " Can I have this Mommy? You said you'd give me $5 if I found your camera." Before I could say a word, she romped over to my laundry room, dug into a crate of shoes, and pulled out my camera! She never fessed up to hiding it, but rather claimed to have a "hunch" that it was there. She took my $5.

Speaking of daughters, today's Outdoor Wednesday is courtesy of my 16 year old daughter's photos of her camping trip to Yosemite last week. Please be sure to visit Susan @ A Southern Darydreamer for more outdoor fun.

They camped outside of Yosemite at East Fork Campground set along Rock Creek.

I heard they cought 11 trout!

This is one of my favorites.

They took a day trip into Yosemite National Park. In my opinion, it's one of the most beautiful places on the face of the earth.

The landscape ranges from meadows and ponds...
to crystal clear mountain lakes....
to majestic mountain ranges.

Doesn't the view just take your breath away?

Metamorphosis Monday Windows

Hello dear bloggers! I'm sorry I've been MIA for a while, but you see, I lost my beloved camera and what's a blogger to do without a camera! Thankfully, my memory card was in my computer when my camera disappeared, so I at least had some photos to work with. I did, however, find an old camera that will just have to do for now. At least I made it back just in time for Metamorphosis Monday hosted by Susan @ Between Naps on the Porch. Make sure to visit her for more amazing Before and Afters.

Do you remember these windows I purchased at an antiques store in Old Town Orange a couple of weeks ago? I bought 6 vintage windows at a steal for $20! I didn't quite know what to do with them when I bought them, but I knew I'd figure it out. I had initially decided to make one into a coffee table and the other just to hang on a wall, but as my husband and I were perusing our home for possibilities, he came up with an unusual idea. At first, I actually had cold feet at the idea, but since I don't follow any strict rules as far as decorating ( I usually break the rules), I thought we'd give it a try.

Here we are in my dining room. Can you see the opening between the columns on either side?

Now, here's what we've done! Do you like it?

It created more of a division of our dining room and the hall separating it from the music room without visually closing it off.

I loved these windows just leaning against my wall, but now that we've hung them, I love them even more!

We hung them using eye screws and a short chain. I was leary about screwing a hole into our trim, but my DH assured me he could just spackle it up if it didn't work.

We kept all the hardware on them. I think it adds character.

The windows give an illusion that the panes were custom made for the space. They also cozied up the dining room a lot.

Old Town Orange

Hello dear Bloggers! It's time for Outdoor Wednesday hosted by Susan @ A Southern Daydreamer. Make sure to stop by to see more outdoor fun. Have I got a great tour for you today, so sit back, relax, grab a cup of coffee or tea, and enjoy the ride.

If you're an antique shop junkie like me, you'll love Old Town Orange, AKA Orange Circle. It's the motherload of antique malls in Southern California. Blocks and blocks of antique shops, eateries, boutiques, and an assortment of small businesses all with old time charm.

Here's a quaint tea room with a Parisien flair called Paris in a Cup. I've got to come back some day and try it.
Ooh la la, isn't it charming?

A park in the middle of the intersection, creates a rotunda or circle, thus the name Orange Circle.

Here stands the first bank of Orange. It's now a Wells Fargo. The interior is stunning with intricate woodwork on the ceiling. Sorry, I have no pictures. I've gotten in trouble a few times taking pictures in stores and didn't want to risk alarming security by taking pictures inside a bank. No one ever told me blogging would be such risky business!

Now, I just had to show you this store. At first glance, you'd think it was an upscale clothing boutique, but upon closer inspection, it's a store filled with designer aprons!

I don't know about you, but I'm not typically dressed in a frou-frou apron when slaving over a hot stove. If my DH saw me in this, I'm sure he'd think I've lost my marbles. Then again, maybe he'd think I'm adding a little spice to more than just my cooking. Heehee.

I'm attracted to a sale like bees are to honey!

Isn't this storefront just delish! C'mon, let's go inside...

My friend, Candy, was drawn to vintage purses. I've got to keep an eye out for those at estate sales.

And me? The tea accoutrements of course! Look at these decorated sugar cubes. I've got to make that for my next tea party.

This town really loves aprons! This is not the apron store, but a fancy cupcake shop. Again, no pictures allowed inside.

For lunch, Candy suggested a tea house called the Victorian Manor.

This Victorian gem flaunts lots of gingerbread and lilac paint.

Stepping inside, you can see the proprietors went over the top with their embellishments.

But that's what makes a tea house fun.

Here I am with my buddies, Candy and Sharon. If you're reading this Michelle, I promised you I'd keep you posted as to the adventures your mom and I have. ;)

Poor, dear Sharon, all this pink and purple gaudiness was just too much sensory overload!

Let's tour the upstairs of the tea house. Only in a Victorian Lady can you get away with all these colors!

Okay, time to walk off all those carbs and head back into the antique shops.

Foodie Friday Carrot Cheesecake

Hello again, and thanks for coming by the Lace and Ivy Cottage. I've been experiencing some technical difficulties with my computer and lost my internet connection for most of the week. Ugh! But at least I made it back in time for Foodie Friday hosted by Designs by Gollum. Make sure to pay her a visit for more mouth watering recipes.

This weeks recipe is a delicious Carrot Cheesecake. I can't take credit for creating this recipe. It's actually from Better Homes and Gardens, but I did test it for you and it's a keeper!
It doesn't look too pretty, but this is also how it looked in the magazine.

Carrot Cheesecake

1 package 2 layer size carrot cake mix
1 C water
1/2 C cooking oil
6 eggs
1/2 C raisins
3 8 oz pkg. cream cheese, softened
1 1/2 C granulated sugar
2 tsp. vanilla
1/2 C coarsely chopped candied walnuts
1 C powdered sugar
3 to 4 tsp. milk

Preheat oven to 325 deg. F. Grease and flour 10-inch springform pan; set aside. In large bowl, combine carrot cake mix, 1 C water, oil, and 3 eggs. Beat with an electric mixer on low for 30 seconds. Beat on medium speed for 3 min. Fold in raisins. Pour into pan.
In another bowl, beat cream cheese with mixer on medum speed until smooth. Beat in granulated sugar and vanilla until smooth. Beat in remaining 3 eggs. Pour slowly over carrot cake layer. Place cheesecake on baking sheet.
Bake for 1 1/2 to 1 3/4 hours or until center is set (top will be uneven and center may fall slightly as it cools). Cool 30 min. Romove sides of pan; cool completely, and refrigerate at least 4 hours before serving.
Top with candied walnuts, if desired.
In medium bowl combine 1 C powdered sugar and enough milk to make of drizzling consistency. Cut cheesecake into wedges and place each wedge on serving plate. Drizzle each piece with icing.

I recommend this recipe, it was easy and delicious. But if you decide to make it, start it early in the morning or the day before because it requires a lengthy time in the fridge to cool.

Look What I Found!

Hooray, it's Today's Thrifty Treasures again hosted by a woman after my own heart, Rhoda @ Southern Hospitality. Don't you just love it when you find the best deals at the very last minute, just when you think you'll be going home empty handed?

Last Wednesday, I spent a wonderful day antiquing at Old Town Orange with a couple of girlfriends. (I'll be sharing more about this trip this week, so stay tuned.) As we exited the last antique mall, ready to go home and say our goodbyes, I spied these windows leaning up against the outside of the building. A post-it note was stuck to one of them pricing them at....hold on to your hats....

$5 each or 6 for $20! As I stood there, pondering which window to take home, an elderly lady walked behind me and said, "Do you know how much I paid for a window like that? $100!" I regretted not taking my van this day, or else I would have taken the whole lot! I did, however, purchase 6 windows. I happily handed the vendor a twenty and pulled my car up to load them. It wasn't easy trying to make them fit, but we did it!

These two windows are my favorites and stand about 5 feet tall. I have plans for these babies. Hopefully I'll have some before and afters by next week.

Then I bought 4 of these windows, 2 small and 2 medium. I also have plans for these, but I'm open to suggestions, so please offer me your 2 cents!

Then, after church on Sunday, I decided to drop by my local GW. I usually don't care to go thrift shopping on weekends because things are picked over by then. But not this time! I found a pair of very heavy brass and crystal sconces for $7.99/pair. I also know exactly where I'll be placing these.
Then, I found this bag of wooden craft eggs. All different sizes and even tagged as hen eggs, bantam eggs, thrush eggs, and pullet eggs. Imagine, they even have the type of bird its from! I have some ideas for these, too, but again your suggestions are appreciated. Besides, I'm speaking to an audience of the most crafty people out there!

Last, I had to make mention of what my 12 year old son bought. He was so excited to find this. It's a brand new George Foreman grill, still in the box with the original wrapping, for $7.99! He's a foodie in the making, it's in his blood and he can't wait to create some of his famous paninis. Guess what we're having for lunch tomorrow!

Simple Pasta Salad

My Daddy used to tell me, "Remember, Lorna, simplicity is beauty." Of course, when he was telling me this, I was a teenager starting to wear makeup and exploring the world of fashion. But my Dad also had an eye for good design. He chose furnishings with simple lines, had a penchant for museum quality Asian antiques, maintained a neutral palette in the home with shots of red or black, china and even bed linens sported crisp and graphic designs. So many of the design elements I see today in magazines, I grew up with as a child, thanks to Dad. I can't tell you how many times I've spied our dining table and chairs in magazines such as Architectural Digest. My DH and I joke, that if dear Dad were still with us today, he'd be blogging!

So what does this have to do with food? After all, it is Foodie Friday @ Designs by Gollum. A lot actually. You see, simplicity can translate to food as well. Sometimes the best recipes are also the simplest ones, especially if you use fresh herbs. Food is not just an experience for the palate, but a feast for the eyes as well. Why else do our mouths water when we SEE these delicious photos on our blogs and magazines?

So today I share with you and incredibly simple recipe I created using texture, color, and fresh ingredients. I've served it at many potlucks and parties, and it's always been a hit. The type of "Can I have that recipe?" dish.

My readers know that things have been going fresh and simple here at the Lace and Ivy Cottage, and here's a pasta salad that goes with that theme.

Not a lot of ingredients are required. Sure you can add to this, but remember, simplicity is key. Here I've pictured Kraft Caesar Italian dressing. This works very well, and can be found at any supermarket. But my favorite dressing to use is Pat and Oscar's House Dressing available at Costco. If you've never seen or used Orzo, it's a pasta that looks like rice.

It makes for a great side dish for BBQ, chicken, or fish.

Lorna's Orzo Salad
1 pound orzo
10 oz pkg. grape tomatoes
5 oz baby spinach leaves (half of package)
2 bunches Italian parsley, finely chopped
bunch of fresh basil, julienned (optional)
1 red onion finely diced
Pat and Oscar's House Dressing or Kraft Caesar Italian Dressing (half of this bottle)
About 3/4 C good quality shredded parmesan cheese

Gently mix ingredients and chill before serving

Tropical Tablescape

Hi All! It's Tablescape Thursday again hosted by Susan @ BNOTP, and as always here at the Lace and Ivy Cottage, decorating is done on a thrifty budget. So please join the hunt for more thrifty treasures with Leigh @ Bloggeritaville.

Many of you may recognize much of my tableware from a previous post, but I tweeked things a little bit to add some tropical flare.
I like using edible centerpieces, simply because they're, well, edible! My kids can't wait for me to cut into that pineapple. And those limes would be perfect for some Mojitos!

The mangoes have some time yet to ripen. At least my centerpiece won't be devoured all at once!
Does this runner look familiar? I used one on my met monday post. I bought 3 of these reed runners from the GW last week for $2.99 each.

I've seen these placemats everywhere, from Crate & Barrel to Target. But these came from my mom, straight from the Philippines. Thanks mom!

The blue plates and water goblets are from the ever reliable Dollar Tree.

These plates are made for IKEA and I found 12 of them for $2 at an outlet.

The napkins are actually kitchen towels, also from the DT.

I was drawn to the citron color of these bowls and was inspired to create a tablescape around them. Yes, from the DT as well.

So, there you have it, my very thrifty tropical tablescape!

San Diego Fair

Hi folks, it's outdoor Wednesday hosted by Susan @ A Southern Daydreamer. Please pay her a visit to see more outdoor frolicking. Today I thought I'd take you on a virtual tour of a southern California summertime tradition, the San Diego County Fair. This year's theme at the fair was a tribute to music.

As you can see, there were tons of people there, even on a Tuesday. Though overcast, the weather was perfect. It was nice to escape the triple digit heat where I live.

Let me take you on a gastronomical tour of the fair. Here, the aroma of roasting corn filled the air.

How about some BBQ Turkey Legs? At $12 a leg, I had to pass. Sorry, I'm a budget conscious foodie.

They deep fry everything at the fair. S'mores, frog legs, avocados, cookies, twinkies...you name it, they fry it!
These chicken kabobs are much healthier, but also at $12, I think I'll just make it at home. Oh no, I'm beginning to sound like my mother!

Okay, we finally opted for the giant hot dog. Fairly priced at $4, with grilled onions to boot.

Do you remember Orange Julius? They used to have Orange Julius restaurants at the malls back in the 70's. They were the first smoothies! I just had to buy some for my kids to try and to take my taste buds down memory lane. We sampled all the flavors, orange, strawberry, and pina colada.

I got dizzy just watching the people on this ride.

And of course, we had to try our luck at some carnival games. She won!

Foyer Mini Met

Hi everyone, I hope you all had a wonderful 4th of July! It's been a busy week, but I did manage to post a mini met and a small, but practical thrifty find this week. Please visit our lovely hostesses Susan @ Between Naps on the Porch and Rhoda @ Southern Hospitality for more mets and thrifty treasures.

As many of you know, I've been transforming our home to a more beachy, summery look to lighten things up a little bit. If you'd like to see my family room transformation, you can click here. Well, it was finally time for the foyer. I still had a deep red tapestry runner on the entry table and red hydrangeas, both left over from Christmas decorating, greeting my guests in July. So off it all went.
Two of my candle holders were even missing the candles. See how neglected this space was! And to think, this is the first thing people see when entering my home. For shame!

I started out changing the runner to this natural reed one I got from the GW last week. I actually found 3 of them at $2.99 each. I knew I could use 2 of them for my long dining table, but I went back and forth trying to decide if I should purchase the third. My very wise 8 year old said, "Just get them all, Mom, you'll find something to do with it." Out of the mouths of babes, sure enough I decided to use this one on my entry table.

I accessorized using things I already had in other places in the house. I think the blue and white added crispness to the area.

I even foraged our front yard for some agapanthus (aka Lily of the Nile), twigs, and palm fronds. Agapanthus are blooming all over here in SoCal.

A Thrifty 4th of July Tablescape

I can't believe I actually pulled off a 4th of July tablescape. Let me explain, I have very little in my home that have red, white, and blue, especially by way of plates and linens. But as luck would have it I scored on a few items this week at the thrift shops and was able to put together a tablescape in my sunroom. Yay! This is my first patriotic tablescape, and it was a lot of fun.

First, let me thank our gracious hostesses Susan @ Between Naps on the Porch and Leigh @ Tales from Bloggeritaville for hosting another week of Tablescape Thursday and Thrifty Thursday. Thanks ladies for letting us join in all the fun! Please pay them a visit to see more participants.

Welcome to my sunroom. When I think of Independence day, I think of fireworks, hot dogs, iced tea or lemonade, and watermelon. So, inspired by my thrift shop finds, I went with the watermelon theme.

The patriotic top hat actually held all the pinwheels you see here, but I tweeked it a little for my centerpiece. I paid only $3 for it.
The watermelon napkins were also from the same thrift shop for $2 for 6. I used them here as placemats. The white quilt design tablecloth was a lucky find at an estate sale for 50 cents.
I've used these vintage luncheon plates for a previous tablescape. They only cost $1 for nine of them at an estate sale.

I've had a case of mason jars sitting in a storage shelf for about 10 years now and forgot all about them. I initially bought them thinking I would be canning fruits and vegetables after a bountiful harvest. Well, the birds ate most of the peaches and we ended up either eating all our vegetables or giving them to friends and neighbors. I'm glad I finally put them to use after all these years! They'll be great to serve iced tea in.

I made a chair scarf with the same red napkins tied with some patriotic ribbon from the Dollar Tree.
Aren't these watermelon napkin rings cute? Just $2 for a set of 8.

I placed a pinwheel in a bud vase at each place setting. I found a case of these vases, 12 of them for $3.99 at the GW.

Outdoor Wednesday Camping Trip

It's Outdoor Wednesday with Susan @ A Southern Daydreamer so please pay her a visit to see more fun alfresco style. Last weekend, our family went on our first camping trip for the summer to a nearby county park called Hurkey Creek. It's located near Idyllwild in the San Jacinto Mountains. I thought I'd snap some pictures of the terrain as we head east of Temecula and pass through some California desert.

This is me and my littlest one at the beginning of our trip. Oh how cool and comfortable I felt. But after a couple of days of hundred degree heat, no electricity or running water, I neither looked nor felt the way I did in this picture!

I'm not a big desert fan. Just a bunch of rocks and dirt. Where are the trees?

There they are. We are now passing through Garner Valley. A very pretty area with a lot of horse ranches.

Yay, more trees!

Here's a glimpse of Lake Hemet. Fishing is good here. My 6 year old caught a catfish and a trout.

I just love to see tents being pitched among pine trees.
Now you may wonder how a family of 11 plus 2 dogs and 2 puppies go camping. Let me show you. Well, here's the main house.

Here are my cousins relaxing after a couple of hours of mountain biking.

I came prepared to keep the little ones cool.

Even the 2 year olds are on relaxation mode.

Lots of creepy crawlies like this one. Doesn't it look prehistoric? Oh the joys of camping!

Now, this is my definition of relaxation. You know me, I love my tea, so even in the wilderness I come prepared! A cup of chocolate mint tea with a brownie. Ahhhh... Sure, its on a paper plate and my mug is not bone china, but hey, I'm roughin'it!

Betty Crocker, Then and Now

Hi all, it's 2nd Time Around Tuesday again hosted by Diane @ A Picture is Worth 1,000 Words. Please stop by to see more 2nd hand treasures.

Before I share I'd like to take a moment to muse about the goings on at the Lace and Ivy Cottage. It's been only 3 months since I discovered the world of blogging and what an adventure it's been. I've met the most creative, thrifty, and friendly women from all over these United States of ours and somehow the world doesn't seem so big anymore. I've been able to see parts of our country, Europe, and Asia through the eyes of fellow bloggers. I've shared in your excitement over Dollar Tree and thrift shop finds. I've seen ingenuity in reusing found and 2nd hand items. What a way to go Green! And I've seen the most talented home designers that could outdo any HGTV design star! Thank you all for the inspiration!

I'm happy to announce that one of my Lemon Blossom sisters have joined the Blogger family! Welcome, Sharon, I can't wait to see what you've got in store for us. She's got the neatest stories to tell about her family in Kentucky. I'd also like to say hello to her daughter, Michelle, in the Bluegrass state. Michelle, you've got an incredible mom and I'm honored to be her friend! Ok, I'm ready now. Are any of you out there fans of Romantic Homes Magazine? If you're a magazine addict like me, you probably have way too many magazines lying around from years past, opening them up time and again and finding something you missed since the last time you opened it. Well, this is a May 2008 issue that I was savoring for the nth time, really soaking up the details of the pages.

I came across an article that featured a vintage c.1950's Betty Crocker cookbook. Here are a couple of the pages featuring it.

Just a few days after reading this article, look what I spotted on a shelf at a local thrift store for $1. I couldn't believe it! It's a 1959 publication on the how to's of entertaining.

That was then, this is now. This is my beloved Betty Crocker cookbook that's about 15 years old. I keep all my favorite recipes, all stained and some handwritten, tucked inside this cookbook. I've told my eldest son, that if anything should ever happen to me, you know where to find my recipes!

Walking Tour of San Juan Capistrano

So, c'mon and follow us girls as we take a walking tour of San Juan Capistrano.

This is a private residence on the historic Los Rios Street, California's oldest neighborhood.

Some homes have been converted into businesses, like this cottage boutique. Allison @ A Little Shabby Always Chic asked me if I visited the shop across the street from the tea house. Yes I did, Allison, and it was wonderful!

This was a vacant house for rent. Guess how much? A whopping $3,500/month and it looks like a fixer, too.

One home was turned into a museum.

A man named Sr. Garcia built this home in the 1800's. According to the docent, he refused to sell his property, then he was murdered. Sounds like something from a Wild West flick. His ghost is reportedly seen on the front porch smoking his cigar. I didn't know ghosts could smoke cigars. Well, no spooks here, let's go inside.

This home, though modest, boasts modern conveniences for its time.

I will no longer complain about my laundry or about my refrigerator space!

I thought the shape of this commode was interesting. Naughty, naughty, someone left the seat up!

Just a couple of blocks over is the famous Mission San Juan Capistrano.

4th grade students in California are required to study the missions and create mission models.

A statue of Father Junipero Serra with a Native American boy greets visitors.

This is the very rustic dining room of the padres.

The Father Serra Chapel is small but ornate. Masses continue to be held here today.

The Tea House on Los Rios

Hi everyone, it's Tea Time Tuesday hosted by Barb @ Grits and Glamour. Please pay our gracious hostess a visit for more delectable tea fare. I just love the whole tea experience, and if you haven't yet had your own tea party or visited a local tea room with your mom, daughter, or girlfriends, then you're missing out on a most delightful experience. I hope this little tour will entice you to give it a try!

Last Saturday, I spent a lovely afternoon with my women's group, the Lemon Blossom League, at the Tea House on Los Rios in San Juan Capistrano. That's right, this is the same Capistrano where the famous swallows return each year. This tea house is unique as it is in a historic home in the oldest neighborhood in California.

The arbor and path beckon visitors to come in.

Here's a peek inside one of the tea rooms. Isn't it just filled with old fashioned country charm? You almost feel like you're at Granny's home coming for a visit.

But let's stay outside on the porch, where our friends await us.

You're here! Glad you made it. Come and have a seat with us!

Our lovely hostess and organizer, Candy, will pour you a cup of her Bourbon Vanilla Rooibos.

Isn't this tea cozy, just...well...cozy?

And here's a tea strainer to strain the loose tea leaves from the pot.

Maybe you'd prefer my pot of Cinnamon Apple tea. Look, you could see the apple pieces floating around. And the aroma, oh my, just as comforting as apple pie.

You must have a pretty tea cup, of course.

Oh, you must try the currant scone with the early California cream and raspberry jam.

If you'd like something rich and decadent, how about some homemade bread pudding?

Something lighter, perhaps? You might want to try these Victorian baked eggs with fresh fruit.

Or are you feeling traditional today with an assortment of tea sandwiches and fruit with cream and brown sugar?

Me? I'm not feeling like traditional tea fare at all today. I think I'll have the Curry Chicken topped with toasted coconut, dried fruit, and nuts and served with rice and mango chutney.

Our gracious Candy gifted each of us ladies with a small pink purse filled with lemon drops as a keepsake. How thoughtful!

Well, I just had to throw in this last picture for fun. It's an antique piano. So what, you say? Well it wasn't in one of the parlor rooms, but in the Ladies' room. Where else would you see that? Nowhere, I guess, unless you're at the tea house on the historic Los Rios street in the world famous San Juan Capistrano. The swallows know where it is, now you do too! Hope you enjoyed the tea tour. Metamorphosis Monday

Those of you who've peeked at my blog know how much I love a bargain. But on rare occassions, I come across some things that are even better. Better than a bargain, you ask? Well yes, if it's FREE of course! A friend of mine was given this piece of furniture handmade by her neighbor's husband. I guess after they tired of it, they gave it to her. But my friend found no use for it in her home, so she passed it along to me. I'm past the rustic, farmhouse look, so it didn't suit me in its original state, but I knew that a little paint would do wonders for it.

I asked my son to sand it down for me and take some before pictures. As much as I enjoy to paint, I hate to sand. You know that feeling some people get when you run your fingernails down a chalkboard? Well, that's what sanding does to me. So priming and painting is where I come in.

I knew exactly where I would put it - out in my sunroom opposite a patio table and chairs we dine on during the summer. I thought it would work nicely for displaying some chotskis and also as a little dessert sevice. Some white paint, leftover from another project, gave it a whole new look. Doesn't it look so cottagey now?
